Morningside Masonry, a stonemason edinburgh was established in 1985 to offer various stonecraft and stonemasonry services. Currently, the company provides the following services:
Wall Repairs – Wall repairs involve replacement of an eroded wall stone, re-pointing of walls, and rebuilding of walls. Restoration of tired walls comprises three basic steps, and they include removal of the eroded stone, replacing it with a well-fitting new stone and then re-pointing the wall with lime mortar to restore its structural integrity and look.
Repointing the walls will also serve the purpose of improving the appearance of the wall. Repointing comprises the following steps: Removing of all defective mortar and skillful hand pointing to enhance robustness. Carrying out this work acts to prevent water penetration through sealing copes on top of the walls and through any open joints in masonry.
Rebuilding walls involve demolishing the whole wall to foundation level and rebuilding it completely. Rebuilding the walls has four basic steps, and they include taking down the wall first, cleaning off the stones for re-use, re-establish the wall for optimal strength, and finally re-point the wall with lime mortar to seal and enhance the appearance of the wall.
Lime Pointing – Lime pointing replenishes the worn out visible mortar of stonework. Lime pointing can weather or crack with time which leads to a poor appearance of the stonework. Morningside Masonry utilise lime mortar to resurrect the worn out appearance of masonry and restore a healthy appearance to the stonework.
Lime mortar lasts longer than concrete, therefore, one can have peace of mind that the stonework will not be compromised even if the environment is harsh. Morningside Masonry uses lime that is compatible with the existing lime mortar in the stonework, and this ensures achievement of a stable and robust stonework. Moreover, our stonemasons take the time to identify and understand the previous criterion that was used in constructing the stonework along with its existing pointing style.
This ensures a perfect finish through appropriate matching of the previous stonework pointing which makes it look like a newly built wall. The process of lime pointing involves removing the defective stone mortar, clean the dust and debris from the masonry joints and beds, hose away excess dirt and debris, then use stonemasonry specific pointing keys to position the mortar between the stone pieces by hand, leave it to dry for a while, and then brush with a smooth or tamping brush to achieve the desired appearance of the stonework.
